Reflections: GRAMMYS 2018 to 2019 (or, "Why I'm Glad I Sat This One Out!") by Allita Lee

Updated: Feb 15, 2019

This year's Grammy AWARDS left me with thoughts of last year's extravaganza. I was fortunate to have attended the 60th Annual event, and wanted to share my experience with you, in a "play-by-play" overview from the vantage point of a stylist. And while I regret not being in the midst of the action this year; my travels take me elsewhere this season I'm still pleased that the stars would have me "sit this one out."

"ADVENTURES IN GRAMMYLAND 2018"

Time to get dressed... A balmy Sunday, the final weekend in January, is an ordinarily atypically busy day in my world. Ordinary because it's what I do. And while us wardrobe stylists get to adorn themselves in whatever tickles our fancy, I prefer to be decidedly vintage as well. At the same time, it's atypical. "Why?," you ask? Well, I certainly can't attend the 60th annual GRAMMY Awards every day. Excitement is mounting at Madison Square Garden today. I'm feeling the buzz all the way in the B-Lo.

There's so much to do before the actual 4 hours of power-packed performances and artist-filled concert clamor. My ensemble has been pulled and prepped by yours truly, so I feel good. I'm gearing up to see once-in-a-lifetime performances from today's hottest--Kendrick Lamar, Sir Elton John, Rihanna, Alessia Cara, DJ Khalid, Bryson Tiller and more (Yes.) But first, the glam routine...

9AM PRE SHOW PREP

First things first, hair and makeup slayed by Steven P. Daniels and Delcina Butler of Excellence Hair Design. The clock is ticking and the little red man on my shoulder (that only I can see,) is telling me that I'm running out of prep time. I quickly opt for an asymmetrical razor bob, sculpted brows, shimmering gold cheeks and a glimmering nude lip. Let's go.

5PM TRAVELING IN STYLE

The crowds are insane and the arena's perimeter is secured from onlookers hoping see the night's stars.  However, getting there was as luxurious as the event itself thanks to BJM Security Services. Nothing less than the best. After all, sleek transportation is an accessory as well.

5:30PM ARRIVING TO GRAMMY TELECAST

Madison Square Garden is decked out in a single shade of black; the flourishes dipped in gold, a stretch of red carpet.  My eyes are perusing the crowd, checking for stars here, or starlets there. Got 'em.

6PM PARTNERS IN STYLE

I meet up with my partner in crime this evening, Nia Badger. Chatting it up with Clive Davis, camera in hand, only she gets the best pics. She grabs a photo with Davis right before the house lights go dim.

8PM PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHT

Show time. None other than Sting, effortlessly belting out what stands as one my favorite tunes, "Englishman in New York."

11PM PARTY TIME

The Official After Party at the Marriott Marquis, front and centre at the Mainstage, I find myself jamming to legendary funk band Chic...

1AM THE NIGHT IS STILL YOUNG

Just doing what a wardrobe stylist does... I tell a story with my outfit. Feathers and lace from ANNARLETTE ensures that I catch the attention of the evening's VIPs...

OFF TO SLEEP

...at a certain hour. See you next year Recording Academy!

We'll see (and kneel in prayer)... and hope that next year will be as unforgettable as the Academy's 2018 show.
